How Much Does OpenClaw Cost?
Someone on the OpenClaw Discord asked this question last week and the top reply was “it’s free, it’s open source.” Which is technically true and practically misleading. The software costs nothing. Running it costs money. And depending on how you run it and how heavily you use the AI models, the monthly bill ranges from $15 to over $150.
The software is free
OpenClaw is MIT-licensed open source. You can download it, modify it, host it, do whatever you want with it. No license fees, no seat pricing, no usage caps baked into the software itself. So yes, this part really is free.
Compute costs money
OpenClaw needs a machine that is always on. Your laptop will not cut it unless you never close it, which is not realistic. So you need one of three things:
| Option | Monthly Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| VPS (Hetzner CX22) | ~$5 | Cheapest. 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM. Works well. |
| VPS (DigitalOcean) | ~$24 | Same specs, higher price. Better UI. |
| Mac Mini (amortized) | ~$68 | $699 spread over 12 months + ~$10 electricity |
The Hetzner route is the cheapest by far, and honestly it is plenty for most workloads. The Mac Mini makes the math harder to justify purely for OpenClaw, though people who already own one obviously pay $0 extra for the hardware.
API keys are the real variable
This is where costs get unpredictable. OpenClaw uses AI model APIs for every decision the agent makes, and a single task might involve dozens of API calls as the agent thinks through steps, reads web pages, and generates outputs.
Rough estimates based on what people report in the community:
| Usage Level | Monthly API Cost | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Light | $5-15 | A few tasks per day, short interactions |
| Moderate | $15-40 | Regular daily use, research tasks, file processing |
| Heavy | $40-100+ | All-day usage, long research sessions, complex automations |
Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet is the most popular model choice because it balances capability and cost. GPT-4o is comparable. But using Claude Opus or GPT-4 Turbo for everything will push costs higher.
One thing I find interesting is how much variance there is between users. Someone doing mostly simple file processing might spend $8/month on API calls, while someone running deep research tasks with lots of web browsing could easily hit $60. The browsing-heavy tasks generate the most tokens because the agent has to read and process entire web pages.
Managed services
If you do not want to handle the infrastructure yourself, managed providers bundle compute, monitoring, and updates into a monthly fee. You still bring your own API key, so that cost remains separate.
| Provider | Monthly Cost | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Various managed hosts | $15-39 | Server, Docker, basic monitoring |
| OpenClaw Cloud (beta) | $25 | Isolated container, zero-access architecture, Telegram-native |
| OpenClaw Cloud (public) | $39 | Same as beta |
Total cost examples
Putting it together for three real scenarios:
Budget self-hoster: Hetzner VPS ($5) + light API usage ($10) = $15/month
Typical managed user: OpenClaw Cloud beta ($25) + moderate API usage ($25) = $50/month
Power user, self-hosted: DigitalOcean VPS ($24) + heavy API usage ($70) = $94/month
The spread is wide. But even at the high end, compare it to hiring someone to do the same research, data processing, and automation tasks. An hour of freelancer time costs more than most people’s monthly OpenClaw bill. And that comparison only gets more favorable the more tasks you delegate.
Reducing costs
A few things that help. Use Claude Sonnet or GPT-4o instead of the flagship models for routine tasks. Write specific prompts so the agent does not wander through unnecessary steps. And for recurring tasks, the agent gets faster over time as it learns your patterns, which means fewer API calls per task. Or you can set spending limits on your API provider dashboard so you never get a surprise bill.
The install guide covers getting set up on your own hardware. Or if you would rather not manage servers, OpenClaw Cloud’s waitlist is open at $25/month for beta users.
